Our charity supports former members of HM FORCES (VETERANS) facing homelessness. We are based in Barnsley South Yorkshire and have working agreements through Barnsley Council (Berneslai Homes) and Doncaster Council (St Leger Homes) to rent some of their housing stock and then sub let to our veterans at cost ie we make no profit on the rents.
We also occasionally work with private landlords to help veterans in other areas of the country when and where we are able to help veterans elsewhere.
The charity is a member of Cobseo, a signatory to the Corporate Covenant and a member of the Community Covenant Veterans Support Groups in Barnsley and Doncaster. Our annual reports and accounts are available to view on the Charity Commission and Companies House Web sites.
Our unique selling point is that we are small enough to react quickly; if we can help someone who contacts us it happens fast, if we are unable to help directly we will always refer enquirers to another organisation we think may be of use.
We raise funds ourselves to allow us to offer assistance to veterans in need. we don’t work with any professional fundraisers
Since the charity was created it has helped around 300 veterans with their housing problems. We can only continue this essential work because of donations from the general public.

Message from a recent new tenant OF HELP 4 HOMELESS VETERANS a former infantry soldier who served in Afghanistan:
Well as I faced becoming homeless imminently H4HV had a conversation with me about the circumstances and got me into a place within the week which was amazing and more than I thought was possible.
Then the issue was I had no way to get to work (travel expenses) and no money left to provide food. I tried everywhere to resolve this myself, provident, my bank, and my employer and none of them were willing to help. I was assured that the charity would help and helped me out with money to get to work,
then I had a delivery this morning from Tesco arranged by Danny at The veterans charity. NOTE WE HAVE AN AGREEMENT WITH DANNY GREENO AT THE VETERANS CHARITY WHO PROVIDES FOOD TO SOME OF OUR NEW TENANTS.
which will make getting to my first payday possible. The home was a massive help and the additional help with travel and food was above and beyond the call of duty.
Between the charities they gave me a chance at a normal life when I had no options left. It was a horrible set of circumstances and they made all the difference in the world and I cannot thank either of them enough for what they have given me.
I’ve never felt like I’ve had any support since the day I left the army some 15 years ago. What you guys do gives people a chance when otherwise they would just fall by the way side.
This veteran like many others hit a difficult period of his life and now he is back into work has his own home to enable his young children to visit and can look forward to a brighter future. That is why HELP 4 HOMELESS VETERANS exists.
Tom Wood and his wife Jean who prepares the houses making them into homes had their fantastic work recognized last year when they received the High Sheriff of South Yorkshires’ Award for their community work. Seen below with High Sherriff John Holt DL.
CEO MEETS TOBIAS ELLWOOD MP MINISTER FOR DEFENCE PEOPLE AND VETERANS ON 18TH SEPTEMBER
Steve Bentham-Bates the CEO of Help 4 Homeless Veterans a Barnsley based charity that works around Barnsley and Doncaster visited the Ministry of Defence on 18th September to meet the Veterans Minister to discuss issues affecting homelessness for veterans of HM Forces.
Along with the Chief Executives of STOLL, HAIG HOUSING and Chair of The WAR WIDOWS ASSOCIATION, Mr Bentham-Bates asked the Minister to encourage other local authorities to give more help to Veterans of HM Forces. He explained how the charity engages via the Community Covenant with both Barnsley and Doncaster Councils through their respective Housing groups Berneslai and St Leger Homes to offer homes through the charity when other options are available to the veterans. This model is now seen as a way other areas of the country could copy.
2 NEW VETERANS MOVE INTO OUR ACCOMMODATION
An ex ACC Cook 22 year veteran and a former Worcester & Sherwood Forresters soldier are our two latest tenants. Both were referred through SSAFA Doncaster and offered accommodation as soon as we had met them both. “John” who left the Army over 30 years ago said “I cannot believe the amount of help I have received from the charity having left the Army so long ago“.
MEETING THE MAYOR OF ROTHERHAM – FURTHER UPDATE
Rotherham MCVC Chairman met with CEO on 15th August to bring H4HV up to date with their activities in the field of homelessness. They have 3 different projects in the process of development therefore H4HV have withdrawn from their plan to extend in to the Rotherham area and will concentrate on expanding in other towns without such a pro active group as the MCVC working. We wish them luck with the projects being developed as the bottom line is Homeless Veterans will receive help in Rotherham.
Excellent meeting with the Mayor of Rotherham Cllr Eve Rose Keenan on Thursdy 27th July 2017 by the CEO and Chair of HELP 4 HOMELESS VETERANS charity, we’re now looking forward to giving a presentation to the Council about our work with a view to linking with Rotherham Council in the same way as we already work in Barnsley and Doncaster. Also pictured is Mayors Consort husband Pat.
